Erbil - South Korean company LG has produced software for a new cell phone brand that lists Kurdish as one of the language options, a development that enables Kurds to use cell phones in their own language for the first time. Many describe LG's new product as unprecedented in terms of using the Kurdish language in the world of high-tech electronics.
LG Electronics for Mobile Technology made this new product public earlier this month during a formal press conference held in Erbil , the regional capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The event was attended by Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, Kay W. Kim, head of LG Electronics in the Middle East and Africa , and local and foreign business owners.
Addressing attendees, Prime Minister Barzani said the new software would provide an important and convenient tool. He added that LG's new product was yet another friendly gesture from the South Korean nation to the people of Kurdistan Region.
"LG has been very bold to incorporate the Kurdish language into the software of its products. In addition to being a commercial step with business potential, the company's new move could nonetheless have a political significance for the people of Kurdistan," said Mr Barzani in his address. Mr Kim said that his company was proud to be the pioneer in incorporating the Kurdish language in the software of its new cell phone brand, which is available in three different designs.
Kurdistan Region in Iraq is home to a population roughly estimated at over 5 million. The first language in the area is Kurdish, which is also recognized as an official language of Iraq in the country's constitution.
In a text message sent to Mr Kim, Prime Minister Barzani thanked LG for the new product and encouraged the company to build a cell phone factory in Kurdistan Region.
The government of South Korea has had troops (Zaytoon Division) deployed on a civilian and humanitarian mission in Iraqi Kurdistan Region since 2003. South Korea 's 2006 budget for civilian and reconstruction projects in Iraqi Kurdistan Region administered by its troops is estimated as $52 million. So far, 12,000 South Korean troops have participated in those civilian missions.
With the 2007 budget estimated as $56 million and with "We are friends" as its motto, Zaytoon continues its assistance to the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. |
